Three years ago today, I picked up and moved from northern Virginia, to North Carolina. I had a job in Virginia that I left, with no prospects in North Carolina, at the beginning of the recession (yes, the economy has sucked for three years now!). Extremely idiotic, right?
It happened like this: My brother and sister-in-law (Jeremy and Amanda), moved to NC in July 2007. They had planned to move away from northern Virginia since before they got married, and knew they wanted to go South. They ended up in Pittsboro, NC. They bought a house that was being built, and encouraged me to move down and live with them.

I was becoming increasingly unhappy with the area I lived in in VA; too many people, too much traffic, and it was becoming increasingly "city," and that's just not my jam. I would refuse to drive anywhere on the weekends because of all the traffic. I couldn't afford to move out of my dad's house because of the inflated prices of everything. I got to the point where I just set a date, told everyone, and planned to move that day (making sure that my dad and others would be able to help me move).
While packing, I job searched and job searched. I sent my resume out, and received one callback for an interview. It didn't work out, but the relocation plan was still in place. My last day at work, I was surprised by a 'goodbye' cake and a card that everyone signed. It's always nice to know you are appreciated :)
On the morning of April 11, 2008, we packed up my dad's truck, my cousin's truck, and my Jeep, and headed down the road.
We unpacked fairly quickly (a result of my not owning much), and had time to unwind and to celebrate.

I eventually found a job, and have been working here for about 2.5 years. I still live with Jeremy and Amanda for now, and I've never regretted my decision to move. I love it here. My parents all have dreams of moving closer to us, too, and we can't wait!
I'll take this over traffic and noise anyday! |
Happy city anniversary to you too! I love the idea of moving somewhere totally new...although unlike you, I'd want to move UP in the big city chain. Glad you're happy though!
ReplyDeleteHappy Move Anniversary! I would love to be able to move somewhere isolated and out of the big city area. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary! I remember when you all left
ReplyDelete:~( and still miss ya. Hopefully 2012 will be my year for leaving nova!
You are awesome for being brave enough to move. I miss a lot about NOVA, but living in the boonies has some benefits too. :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you take word verification off your commenting, I will love you forever.
Sorry, Kara. I didn't even know I had it on! I'll fix it now.
ReplyDeleteWow, I love that story, awesome that it worked out! My good friend lives in Mebane, NC and we love visiting her. Not sure I could live there but it's a beautiful state.
